Exercise 1: Self Portrait. - Launch Photoshop. Create a new document in CMYK mode at 300dpi with the shortest side no less than 2", and longest side no more than 7". Using the tools discussed in the lecture, make a self-portrait in shades of white and tints of black. Save the document as a .psd file (native photoshop format.) Save early and often. When you have completed your portrait, flatten the layers and save it as a .tif file.
Basic Page Layout - margins, measurements, text and image boxes, text tools, textwrap, outlines
Exercise 2: "Place" your self-portrait into a Quark Document. Introduce yourself in a paragraph or two--.Homework: Read about vector and raster software, also, see the section on software about the traditional purpose of the three types of print design software.
AM PM Basic Vector Illustration Concepts - paths, outlines, character/paragraph, smoothing, align, color pallates
Exercise 3: Lines - Launch Illustrator. Create an 8.5x11", landscape oriented document.
Type a word. "Create outlines" of the word. Cropping - With the object selection tool (black arrow,) make the word is larger than the printable area, yet still legible (try with and without "shift>constrain")- Or Negative Space - You may find that the font you used does not lend itself to cropping. Instead, just concentrate on the negative spaces that you are creating in between letters, and in between the word and the border.
Manipulate the letters with the path selector tool (white arrow) Make sure that the word is still legible. Try "zooming out" to simulate squinting or holding the paper far away, as you might do with a conventional piece of artwork.- Complete the composition. Use only gray scale, no gradiations, no filters, no drop shadows.
Daily Procedure: Archiving
Did you bring a 100Mg PC zip disc, or a CDR? Make sure you have an FSU e-mail acct. and know your password.Visit the "transfers, storage, and backup page" for more instructions

Make the sum of these parts equal to a design.
Homework: Look over Project 1 (week_2), do the reading (vis_lang), and make sketches in your sketchbook while you're fresh with new info
