File Naming Rules
File Naming Conventions

File names use different conventions and restrictions depending on the operating system (Windows, Mac, Unix.) Because the server computer hosting your site may run on a different operating system than yours, name your files so they can be used on the various servers.

No more than 8 characters

Lower case only

Do not use "spaces" or special symbols like ' or " or : or , or . or ( or ^ etc.

An_underscore in safe. Ex. gills_page.html

Simplicity.

Nonsense words make it difficult to find files later.

It's almost like an exercise in finding the shortest, most succinct word to desecribe the content of the file.

Now think about your file structure.

If your file is in a folder with your name on it, then your name shouldn't be a part of the file's name.

Numbers can force order. Ex. 1_pic.jpg and 2_pic.jpg
